New Zealand Fashion Week …

New Zealand Fashion Week …

In the good old days I used to have an online store called Fashion Artiste, which sold a range of New Zealand and Australian fashion labels. During this time, I was invited to New Zealand Fashion Week as a buyer and had the pleasure of going twice, in 2010 and 2011.

It was such a great experience that I’ll probably never have again. At this point, I can’t even get home to NZ. We stayed in central Auckland, and were provided our own Fashion Week drivers who took us to and from the shows and appointments. We had an appointed assistant to help us get to where we needed to be. There were front row seats, we met celebs, and scored goody bags and champagne galore! And of course, saw some fabulous catwalk presentations and stunning creations from some of New Zealand’s best designers, both established and up-and-coming.

This year celebrates 20 years of NZFW, but unfortunately 2 weeks before it was due to start, NZFW had to be postponed due to COVID restrictions. Another devastating blow for all the organisers, designers and participants in what would have been another amazing celebration of New Zealand creativity.

Fingers crossed there will be an opportunity to reschedule at a later date this year.

In the meantime though, it has provided the perfect time to look back on the last 20 years of fashion, fun, and frivolity.

I’m still hoping that I can get back there one day, probably not as a buyer again, but as a keen observer of this exciting and unique industry. In my opinion New Zealand fashion has always run its own race, has always been slightly edgier and more unique than other countries, and I hope that continues for many more years to come.

It’s quite probably the only time in my life that I will have had a driver too. ..
